Macquarie Institute for Innovation

Social Benefit Initiative

The Social Economy in Australia is large, complex and in need of substantial University support. Typically the organisations that constitute the social economy do not have access to the necessary skills or resources to perform optimally. Further, a lack of skills, resources and research is limiting the rate of innovation, forcing organisations to rely on 'proven' strategies and thus deal with age-old problems in old and antiquated ways.

The Macquarie Institute of Innovation Social Benefit Initiative (SBI) will deliver high-quality education and research to stimulate responsible, innovative and effective solutions to social problems. In doing so, it is intended that Macquarie will become THE Australian University that non-profit organisations turn to for education, mentoring and research.

The philosophy underlying the Institute's Social Benefit Initiative is that effective management and innovation are critical for success in the social economy (and elsewhere for that matter!). Its immediate priorities are for the successful delivery of INOV 806 Social Entrepreneurship, the creation of the SBI and the initiation of outreach programs to create an immediate and lasting link between the Institute's SBI and the Australian Social Economy.

The Institute's SBI will be involved in a number of key initiatives throughout 2006 including:
