INOV810 Managing from Start-up to Growth
This unit is not presently being offered by Macquarie University.
----------
Description
The unit addresses the specific issues facing the creation and rapid growth phases of knowledge-intensive companies. Its objective is to empower the students to undertake the lead management role in such start-up and growth.
Start-up is addressed through experience from active entrepreneurs and follows the typical stages in a new venture establishment including refinement of the original business idea, resourcing the venture, operational plan, market and communication plans, etc. Getting strategy clear in the area of market offer, business ideas, is undertaken before establishing the company, setting up the board of directors, recruiting the entrepreneurial team and establishing appropriate reward structures/motivation.
The operational phase needs to address management, culture, marketing, production and negotiation.
The underlying theories relevant to these phases are based on the opportunity model and follow the key changes which occur and which require action through phases of establishment and growth.
In the growth phase of the unit, the objective is to provide insights into the problems and opportunities that emerge in growing entrepreneurial companies. The insights come from a series of concepts, frameworks and heuristics that can be utilised to make management decisions in organizations of various sizes and types.
The owner-manager undertakes a series of decisions and actions recognizing and choosing opportunities, obtaining and allocating resources, challenging and directing personnel and adapting personal goals and corporate strategies to changing personal and business conditions.
The unit is supported by extensive use of case studies, visiting practitioners and a computer-based simulation ("Venture Out!") from the Harvard Business School.
