----------
Description
This unit raises awareness of new venture development, provides basic business skills and develops ability to analyse and evaluate ideas for their commercial potential. It introduces entrepreneurship, intellectual property and business planning for successful new ventures. Learning relates to opportunities in all individual academic disciplines. The main component is a set of browser-based multi-media modules.
This two credit point unit utilises a tested and innovative Web-based self-learning approach (licensed from Strathclyde University) to provide an introduction to the concept of starting one's own business as a serious career option at some stage in the life-cycle. It presents the processes involved in identifying and developing business ideas, and successfully transforming these ideas through to the business start-up stage. The unit content is designed to help in applying relevant techniques and skills in a structured, systematic manner. Furthermore, the learning approach draws on the existing knowledge-base relative to the student's individual academic discipline. The main component of the class is a browser-based multi-media module.
This class provides an insight into the business knowledge, skills and general requirements of successful new venture creation. In this respect, it has the potential to:
- enhance employment prospects/own venture creation opportunities
- raise awareness of the key concepts of new venture development, how the business operates and what influences success or failure;
- provide a practical context for practising and developing a wide range of essential business skills such as managing resources and people, posing and solving problems;
- develop the ability to analyse and evaluate commercial business opportunities within the context of the student's specific discipline.
